Leg Extension With Straight Leg (Resistance Band)
Includes 30 Free Mini Pilates Exercise Cards!
Hello, Pilates adventurers!
Today’s playful Pilates mission is Leg Extension With Straight Leg (Resistance Band): a calm-looking supine exercise that asks the core, hips, hamstrings, pelvis, and band-holding hand to cooperate like a well-trained Pilates committee.
The exercise is simple enough on paper: lie supine, switch on the core, place the band around one foot, bring that knee in towards the chest, hold the band in the same hand, then exhale to extend the leg while the other leg stays straight and resting on the floor.
But once the band gets involved, things become more interesting. The working leg wants to rush. The pelvis considers helping without permission. The ribs try to pop up for a better view. The core receives a memo marked please keep everyone civilised.
This exercise fits beautifully into resistance-band classes because it combines leg strength, hip control, breath, and pelvic stability. You can pair it with my Supine Straight-Leg Hip Circles With Resistance Band, build it into a 15 Minute Resistant Band Pilates Lesson Plan, or use it alongside my Pilates Leg Floats Infographic for a floor-based core-control theme.
That’s why I’ve turned this exercise into a playful Pilates mini exercise card game that includes 30 modification cards for teachers and students to explore.
Use these mini cards for class planning, private sessions, home practice, or anytime your Pilates routine needs a little more band-based clarity. For contrast, you could mix this supine band mission with standing balance challenges such as Squat On Wobble Cushion or Lunge On Wobble Cushion.
And, hey, if you like these free cards, you’ll probably enjoy my premium Pilates Exercise Card Decks.
Your Pilates Mission Should You Choose To Accept It…
Your opponent is the Band Extension Boss.
Its favourite tactics include sneaky rib flare, travelling pelvis, overexcited hamstrings, uneven band tension, and the sudden belief that “straight leg” means “send the leg into orbit.”
Your equipment is one resistance band.
Your mission is to extend the leg with control on the exhale, maintain core support, keep the resting leg long on the floor, and avoid letting the band become the emotional leader of the exercise.
For a useful outside reference, the NHS has a collection of strength and resistance exercise videos, including exercises designed to build strength and control.

Leg Extension With Straight Leg (Resistance Band) FAQs
“What is Leg Extension With Straight Leg (Resistance Band)?“
Leg Extension With Straight Leg (Resistance Band) is a supine Pilates exercise where one knee starts towards the chest with a band around the foot, then the leg extends with control while the other leg stays straight and resting on the floor. It challenges the core, hips, hamstrings, pelvis, and leg control.
“Why use a resistance band for leg extension?“
The resistance band gives feedback, support, and challenge. It can help guide the leg while adding resistance through the movement. Cleveland Clinic notes that resistance bands can strengthen muscles effectively and are portable, versatile, and accessible: resistance band strength-training guide.
“Is Leg Extension With Straight Leg good for core stability?“
Yes. The core has to stabilise the pelvis and ribs as the leg moves away from the body. Keep the movement controlled and avoid letting the lower back arch. ACE Fitness notes that leg movements with unsupported legs can challenge the deep abdominal muscles and hip stabilisers: core stability exercise overview.
“What muscles does Leg Extension With Straight Leg work?“
It works the hip flexors, hamstrings, quadriceps, hip stabilisers, and core. It also trains pelvic control because the body has to keep the pelvis steady while the banded leg extends.
“Who should avoid Leg Extension With Straight Leg (Resistance Band)?“
Avoid or adapt this exercise if it causes hip, hamstring, groin, knee, or lower back discomfort. Use a lighter band, soften the knee, reduce the range, or bend the supporting leg if needed.
